AFS INTERCULTURAL PROGRAMS
AFS Intercultural Programs is an exchange organisation that caters for all
ages. Our High School Exchange program is designed for students 15 to18
years of age. This program gives high school students the opportunity to
learn about another culture and language by living with a host family and
attending high school overseas. Over 18s can apply for a Community Service
program. This program allows you to experience working as a volunteer in
a community based organisation. Projects include working in environmental
protection, addressing social issues, and working in the areas of education

CANNING COLLEGE
Canning College offers mature-aged people a chance to improve their career
opportunities with re-entry courses and education programs. Over 400 international
students benefit from our services and the interaction with Australian students.
Courses vary in length from one year university entrance and Flying Start
courses, semester length bridging (Year 11) courses, through to eight week
short courses and weekend seminars. Canning College students must

The Career Information Centre (CIC) is a FREE library and advice service
open to anyone for help with career and course ideas, and information.
We have videos that can be viewed at the centre or borrowed by schools,
TAFEWA colleges and other groups. Computers are available
for searching for occupational descriptions and courses (OZJAC) and accessing
the JIIG-CAL Career Voyage program; a computer based career assessment package
(bookings are essential). For those in the country, a postal version

CENTRAL TAFE
Central TAFE is one of the largest TAFE colleges in WA, providing a diverse
range of training to around 25,000 people each year. There are around 300

The Apprenticeship and Traineeship Support Network (ATSN) is part of the
Department of Education and Training and has offices in the metropolitan
area and a number of regional centres. ATSN provides support and information

of apprenticeships and traineeships. ATSN has staff available for mediation
and dispute resolution which can be done in the workplace or at our offices.
Administration is provided for registration, suspensions and any variations
to agreements as well as the issuing of trade certificates and all general
administration of apprenticeships and traineeships. ATSN can also provide
information, advice and administration in relation to travel and accommodation

The Overseas Qualifications Unit (OQU) provides assessment, advice and information
to permanent residents, non-permanent residents and Australian citizens
about recognition of overseas gained qualifications and skills.
We can help with:

- assessment of child care qualifications;
- English language assessment for the WA College of Teaching;

Of interest to parents and caregivers are the Parents as Career Partners
seminars which are delivered by the Employment Directions Network. These
45 minute seminars will help parents and caregivers understand the current

The VET Access Branch is committed to increasing the participation and achievement
in VET for identified groups, particularly those marginalised by society.
The VET Access Branch has several initiatives designed to enhance
the capacity of learners in a wide range of educational pathways to ensure
the concept of inclusion is adopted across Department policies and programs
and in organisations providing vocational education and training. During
this year's Career Choices Expo the VET Access Branch is hosting a stand
to make information available regarding issues of equity in VET and material
promoting good practice across the VET system.

Australian Apprenticeships (formerly known as New Apprenticeships) are a
first rate career option and can be as professionally, financially and personally
rewarding as a university pathway. Australian Apprenticeships are available
in over 500 occupational areas and are accessible to all job seekers of
working age. Australian Apprenticeships combine practical work experience
with structured training which can be on or off the job. Australian Apprentices
receive a nationally recognised qualification on completion of their training.
Australian Apprenticeships are flexible and can be undertaken while still
at school. Australian School based Apprenticeships are increasingly a career
option for secondary school students as they are able to gain a vocational
and technical education qualification while pursuing their senior secondary
certificate.
Recent Australian Government initiatives include Tools for Your Trade;
Commonwealth Trade Learning Scholarships; and enhanced access to Centrelink

The PTA operates as Transperth and Transwa, which provide rail, bus and

VOLUNTEERING WA
The YVolunteer program gives young people the opportunity to learn about
and contribute to their communities through volunteer work in local, not
for profit agencies.
This school based program is an initiative of Volunteering WA, the Peak
Body for volunteering in Western Australia. Students who participate in
the state wide program expand their life experience and develop greater
empathy and tolerance for others.
This year, the Department of Education and Training piloted the Community
Service Program which requires Year 10 and 11 students to complete 20 hours
